How to Read a Positive Home Drug Test Result
A calm next-step guide for parents after an initial at-home screen shows a positive or unclear result.
Treat it as preliminary
A positive home screen means the test detected a targeted substance or metabolite above its cutoff. It does not automatically prove addiction, current impairment, intentional use, or exactly when use occurred.
Read the instructions again before reacting. Confirm the reading window, line interpretation, expiration date, storage conditions, and whether the sample or device was handled correctly.
Ask about possible explanations
Prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, foods, and sample issues can sometimes affect screening results. A calm conversation gives you a better chance of understanding what happened.
If the result conflicts with what your teen says, avoid turning the test into the only evidence. Confirmatory testing and professional input are more appropriate when the outcome matters.
Escalate when safety is involved
Immediate danger, intoxication, overdose symptoms, self-harm risk, severe withdrawal, or threats at home require urgent support, not another home test.
For non-emergency concerns, consider a pediatrician, licensed counselor, substance use professional, or local family support service.
